About Uruguay

The Oriental Republic of Uruguay is located in the south-eastern part of South America. Home to approaching 4,000,000 people and covering an area of approximately 176,000km², this beautiful country has much to offer.

One of the most economically developed countries in South America, Uruguay has a high GDP per capita; the country’s economy is largely based on agriculture, making up 10% of GDP and the most substantial export, and the state sector.

Uruguay’s only land border is to the north with Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil. To the west lies the Uruguay River, to the southwest lies the estuary of Río de la Plata, with Argentina just a short commute across the banks of either of these bodies of water. To the southeast, you can find the southern part of the Atlantic Ocean.

Uruguay has a dense fluvial network which covers the country. This consists of four river basins or deltas: the Río de la Plata, the Uruguay River, the Laguna Merín, and the Río Negro. The major internal river is the Río Negro – the Black River. Several lagoons are found along the Atlantic coast, enhancing the beauty of this country and all it has to offer.
